Extending Xen* with Intel Virtualization Technology
نویسندگان
چکیده
Xen* is an open source virtual machine monitor (VMM) developed at the University of Cambridge to support operating systems (OSs) that have been modified to run on top of the monitor. Intel has extended the Xen VMM to use Intel ® Virtualization Technology ∆ (VT) to support unmodified guest OSs also. This was done for IA-32 Intel ® Architecture processors as well as Itanium ® architecture processors. In this paper we describe the changes that have been made to Xen to enable this support. We also highlight the optimizations that have been made to date to deliver good virtualized performance.

Virtualization is an irreplaceable technique for efficient management of hardware resources in the field of information technology and computer science. With this phenomenal technology come challenges that hinder proper performance analysis of virtualized systems. This study focuses on virtualization implementations, various enterprise solutions, characterization of observations, concerns, pitf...
متن کاملProtecting Xen hypercalls Intrusion Detection/ Prevention in a Virtualization Environment
During the past few years virtualization has strongly reemerged from the shadow of the mainframe generation as a promising technology for the new generation of computers. Both the research and industry communities have recently looked at virtualization as a solution for security and reliability. With the increased usage and dependence on this technology, security issues of virtualization are be...
متن کاملAn Investigation of Xen and PTLsim for Exploring Latency Constraints of Co-Processing Units
What follows is a description that can hopefully act as a guide for researchers who are interested in using Xen with PTLsim to develop and analyze systems. This paper focuses on a specific set of systems that are intended to model a multiprocessing computer in which processing units, in addition to the main CPU and main memory, can assist in general computations. Particular depth is described i...
متن کاملTesting the Xen Hypervisor and Linux Virtual Machines
Xen is an interesting and useful technology that has made virtualization features, normally found only in high-end systems, more widely available. Such technology, however, demands stability, since all virtual machines running on a single system are dependent on its functioning properly. This paper will focus on the methods employed to test Xen, and how it differs from normal Linux R © testing....
متن کاملThoughts and Ideas on Loadable Hypervisor Modules
The topic of virtualization has received renewed attention. Xen is a popular open source type-I hypervisor. The Xen hypervisor currently has limited capabilities for runtime modification to the core hypervisor, which impairs research into dynamic adaptation for system-level virtualization. This paper discusses recent investigations into the feasibility of extending Xen to support runtime adapta...
